Coracesium is the oldest known name of Alanya, whose historical background dates back to prehistoric times. It was named as Coracesium after the beginning of the first civilized settlements and later the city took the name "Kolonoros". In 1221, the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat conquered the city and used the city as his winter capital by giving the name of Alaiye. In 1935, when the great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk visited the city, he changed the city's name to "Alanya".
